People are second-guessing their Craigslist profiles after the recent tragic murder of George Weber at the hands of an angsty 16-year-old Satanist. NYC’s Anti-Violence Project, bless its heart, would like to help. Too bad not one of AVP’s online safety tips, which the NY Blade published today, would have prevented Weber’s murder. Here are the organization’s words of duh-ism:
1. Never give anyone else your password.
2. Disable cookies on your browser.
3. Use a blank or false email address.
4. For your first meeting, pick a place that’s public.
5. Remember that when you meet someone you’ve chatted with online, you’re really meeting them for the first time.
Are you writing this down people? Because we have two more of our own: demand face pics from at least two different angles, and never choose “Fuck, yeah!” for your safe word.
