This crazy story surfaced back in January, but we didn’t appreciate the gay tabloid glory of it until SF Weekly published this profile of 26-year-old Kaushal Niroula (pictured, left), who they describe “a spiffy-dressing Nepalese immigrant with a haughty British accent,” and who managed to con 3 wealthy people out of a total of a $1.3M. He then weasled into a plea deal for an art fraud case in a Marin County Court and bounced down to Palm Springs where, along with 4 alleged co-conspirators on or around December 7th, he made Clifford Lambert (below, right) disappear and took off with the old man’s Mercedes.
One of the co-conspirators, Miguel Bustamente, was a bartender at San Francisco’s Jet bar (soon to be reopened as Trigger on Market Street), and after being nabbed in Palm Springs loading up a van full of Lambert’s belongings in January, cooperated with authoroities and provided dirt on Niroula and his boyfriend/sugar daddy, 60-year-old San Francisco lawyer David Replogle, who is also being held on murder charges.
It’s a completely sordid story, drawing comparisons to The Spanish Prisoner and Catch Me If You Can, and it involves another young con man, Danny Garcia, who was also fucking Niroula and who would pose as Niroula’s enemy for two-man jobs. Authorities have been trying to parse all the sexual relationships among the co-conspirators in order to better see through all the finger-pointing between them that promises to complicate the case for a while.
