A week after Sabrina Carpenter hard launched boyfriend Barry Keoghan—he of Saltburn and “Murder on the Dancefloor” fame—in the music video “Please Please Please,” the reigning pop girl of summer is back with a new video breaking the internet: A cover of “Good Luck, Babe,” the latest song from the other reigning pop girl of summer, Chappell Roan.
The internet lost its mind for this unexpected merging of interests. The “Espresso’ singer whos “Nonsense” outros deserve their own album (our fave: “Should I text him back it’s such a tough call / That won’t fit inside my bro, I’m dumb small / People who hate Pride can suck my Gov Ball”) singing the absolute banger that is the bridge to “Good Luck, Babe”? What have we done to deserve such marvels for this particular Pride month?
Not to mention that Carpenter served up Keoghan like an absolute snack in “Please Please Please,” casting him as her bad-boy boyfriend who robs banks, engages in fisticuffs, locks a man in a trunk, and is ultimately left handcuffed to a chair with duct tape over his mouth. (Honestly, we’re not mad about it.)
For many of us, “Please Please Please” was the first time we found ourselves attracted to Keoghan, even after watching him slurp Jacob Elordi’s dirty bathwater and then bounce his dick around the halls of a country estate to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor.” Maybe we just have a bad boy fetish, or maybe we are so susceptible to Carpenter’s powers that not only do we find ourselves mindlessly intoning “I’m working late cuz I’m a singer” at all hours of the day, but we are so deep under her spell that she can convince us this teeny little Irish man is a hunk.
It doesn’t really matter, of course; a new internet boyfriend is a thing to cherish and enjoy—until the next one comes along. The real question is: Will we now get Chappell Roan doing an over-the-top cover of “Espresso” or “Please Please Please”? God, our little gay hearts couldn’t take it. With 10 days left of Pride, we’ll see.
