Gavin Newsom, in Denver for the Democratic National Convention, found out about Martin’s death just before taking the podium to speak to the assembly and wasted no time in invoking the same-sex marriage debate for which the Martin-Lyon union is certain to be an inarguable symbol–no one wants to be seen as screwing over a couple of little old ladies.
