If you haven’t seen him on The Sword (like here, or in our Sword 100) you might know of him by now from his “Christmas Tree,” “Jackie and Debra,” and “Mother’s Day” videos that have racked up millions of views on the Tube.
Our buddies at Queerty did an interview with him this week, in which he talks about being a gay comedian, impersonating his mother (who is Italian and from New York, as we suspected, not Jewish) since he was 10, and wanting to do something besides dress in drag and impersonate his mother sometime in the near future.
He also mentions a failed audition for SNL–a show he’d still love to be cast on someday–and how all the minstrelsy and man-on-man kissing lately doesn’t bother him much:
See, I don’t look at that stuff as being homophobic—I think that’s just not funny. It’s more adolescent than anything and I think they’re probably catering to their audience. It seems very frat boy-ish. When I think about that show, sadly, I do think that a lot of their ideas go out the window when it comes to the bottom line, which is to get audiences. I think it’s still very culturally relevant, especially considering the election, but it’s also gotta maintain viewers. I would still be very flattered if I were cast on that show.
Well put.
We leave you with this, a brand new video in which John Roberts and Margaret Cho do dueling mom impressions.
