Citing the Beach Boys, Nirvana, Bad Brains, and Lesley Gore as equal influences, we figure if Phil Spector had never murdered that woman he’d have a new protégé on his hands, and a totally cute one at that. Wavves’ stunningly loud recordings mix fuzzy vocals with blown out power chords, surfy guitar riffs, and doo-wop harmonies; a mixture ominously well-conceived for a 22-year-old stoner kid from the beach. The now come-of-age School of Nirvana is yielding a lot of thrashy pop vibrance to the west coast music scene, and this band, in our opinion, may be the next torchbearer of blissed-out angst. His first two releases—a self-titled cassette and a double-single 7″— sold out quickly, foretelling a manic future for Williams. You can keep your Jonases and your Fall Out Boys; we’ve found a new teen beat and we’re ready to ride the Wavves.
