“Congratulations Kathy, you’re the most famous female comic in the world.” That’s what Jim Carrey had to say to Kathy Griffin a couple days after “the photograph” made headlines. It may have been true, but it was a small consolation for the D-List A-lister whose life was turned upside down overnight when a photo of her holding a mask of Donald Trump covered in ketchup exploded online.
In Kathy’s new documentary A Hell of A Story, the often foul-mouthed and never predictable redhead gives you a very personal behind-the-scenes look at the shitstorm her life became for the sake of art. She confesses now that it may have been a bad decision, but at the time she thought the photo would cause a mild stir and disappear into oblivion, replaced by Trump’s next outrageous tweet. Little did she know that tweet would be about her and that from that day on, the Trump administration, the DOJ, the FBI, and even foreign governments would conspire to make her life a living hell. She was put on the “no fly” list and was being investigated as a potential terrorist for plotting to kill the President – an accusation that if brought to trial could result in life imprisonment. Over a halloween mask covered in ketchup.
There’s more. Even her own Mother Maggie was afraid her daughter had finally gone to far. “They say you are part of Al qaeda!” Kathy was on the megabomber’s hit list and received countless death threats. Even more horrifically, Kathy’s sister, who was in the hospital with cancer, received death threats too.
Blackballed overnight from Hollywood and fired from her NYE hosting gig with Anderson Cooper on CNN, Kathy couldn’t find one news outlet or venue willing to book her so she could tell her side of the story. But none of this would deter her. Kathy decided that if she couldn’t get work in the U.S. she would take her show on the road. She and her manager googled “Countries that hate Trump” and booked venues for what became her sold-out European tour.
There is so much more to this amazing documentary – like a phone call from her longtime pal Rosie O’Donnell – but the end may be the best part of all. We get to see Kathy’s hilarious stand up live from the tour and believe it or not, it’s one of her best yet! She’s bounced back funnier, more honest, more raw, and more “Kathy” than ever.

Her act chronicles everything from death threats to choice words about her once pal Andy Cohen to a visit by the FBI at her home to determine if she was in fact conspriring to kill Donald Trump. During the interrogation she is asked if she has any weapons… and Kathy says No. Then she remembers the award hanging on her wall in the adjoining room and proudly proclaims that she does have a huge Sword!
As soon as she sees the look on her attorney’s face she realizes that a person being investigated for plotting to decapitate someone probably shouldn’t have a sword. So she goes on to explain it was a gift, kind of an honor actually, given to her while she was hosting the GayVN Gay Porn Awards. Then she goes on at length to talk about the winning movie that year, JUSTICE, and how it’s very similar to what’s happening to her – the hero is falsely accused and is interrogated, just like she is right now, except for the orgy at the end.

SPOILER ALERT: the agents laughed and she was exonerated but you have to see the A Hell Of A Story to hear about it in Kathy’s own words. It’s hysterical but it’s more than that. This documentary is important. As Kathy says, if it can happen to her, it can happen to you or anyone who pushes the envelope of free speech or dares to speak truth to power.
If you thought Kathy was unfiltered before, after what she’s been through, she now gives literally ZERO fucks. She’s back with a vengeance and we could not be more proud of our NakedSwordsman – she’s unstoppable!
Love. Her!
