1. Of the 10,500 couples who’ve gotten gay-married since it became legal in 2004, two thirds did it in the first six months, followed by a sharp decrease in numbers (2,000 in 2005, 1,400 in 2006, and 867 in the first eight months of 2007). This obviously suggests that the pent-up demand for marriage licenses was exhausted quickly, and that, (snooze flash) “marriage isn’t for everybody,” says lawyer Mary L. Bonauto who argued the case in the MA Supreme Court in 2004.
2. There are actually at least two middle-aged lesbians on Cape Cod who don’t care about getting married!
“I just don’t really see the point in it,” said Michelle Smith, 51, of Truro, who has two children with Terri Humes, 51, her partner of 27 years. “I don’t need that paper for any type of validation. I know what her and I have.”
Right on, Michelle! But JFYI, it’s “she and I” not “her and I.”

No one’s forcing us, but it would make us look like real sticks in the mud if we avoided it altogether when it is, legitimately, the biggest news event to affect the gays in several years. While it may not be our bag, we actually (for realz!) support everyone who wants marriage rights and the masses of people likely to be clamoring for licenses is going to be dramatic and moving, even for us… even though it feels a little like Valentine’s Day and makes single people that much more insecure. Anyway…
Let’s gang up on The Sword — hey, you know we love you anyway.
BUT if you find the subject boring, and as far as news copy goes I tend to agree with you, WHY ARE YOU COVERING IT? No one’s forcing you to, are they? Just stick to the sexy and the scandalous, as far as I’m concerned!
Besides, your logo says “SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE,” so the whole issue falls outside your mandate, doesn’t it? (Hehe, I said mandate.)
i agree that it’s a little confusing, but i think it’s the culture of gay marriage that they are opposing, not the legality itself.
I don’t get it, Sword. No one is saying gays have to get married, and certainly not all of us want to. but it’s nice that those who do, can. Being anti-gay marriage suggests that you are anti-equality, which is sad and confusing for a website that is trying to appeal to a gay audience.
