In a letter to the New York Blade, Dr. Marjorie Hill (pictured) addresses the 1 in 4 HIV+ New Yorkers who do not know their status. Doctors often “do not test patients because they do not view them as vulnerable,” Hill writes, “though many are at risk.” Only 2% of New York doctors test their patients for HIV, largely because they are discouraged by laws that require them to counsel their patients and obtain written consent beforehand.
Hill suggests that the law be changed to require written consent for those patients refusing the test, rather than accepting it. Patients would be able to opt out, but Hill argues that when “testing is offered and easy, people take the test.” Bright and sparkly syringes would help, too.
