The goal, according to various government agencies there, is to “purify the Internet’s cultural environment and protect the healthy development of minors.”

Search engine censorship is a murky field for the same reason that your local headshop owner would prefer you call it a “water pipe” instead of a “bong.” Search engines obviously don’t generate porn; they just point users to it.

Still, Google is playing along with those frigid Chinese officials who warn that violators of the stringent internet regulations will be severely punished.
