Time To Die, GLAAD. Time To Die.

John Mayer — a gay ally, if not a gay man himself — recently told Playboy, “I grabbed [Perez Hilton] and gave him the dirtiest, tongue-iest kiss I have ever put on anybody—almost as if I hated fags.” Today, GLAAD issued an “ACT NOW” call for fans to demand an apology from John Mayer for using the “F-word.”

This call to “action” came on the same day that gay Kenyans were beaten, a state representative connected gay marriage to fecal matter and we mark the second anniversary of middle-schooler Lawrence King’s hate murder. But GLAAD doesn’t mention any of that on its blog. Just the John Mayer thing.

GLAAD calls itself a watchdog. Well come with me, GLAAD, because we’re going to the vet! And he’s got a syringe full of something that’ll make you feel reeeaaal good.

Why attack GLAAD when we could be fighting the real enemy? Because when GLAAD issues a press release, people write about it. When GLAAD asks for money, people give. And when GLAAD throws a banquet, B-list celebrities show up. GLAAD is the most visible gay rights organization in the country, and it’s using that power to condemn gay people — from famous designers to local cartoonists — and to throw awards shows for straight people — awards shows that, on top of their breeder vadge worship, exclude gay attendees.

There is a section on GLAAD’s website called “Accomplishments.” It contains “accomplishment reports.” The last one is from 2007, and this report does not contain a single accomplishment other than sending letters to the editor, throwing screen-writing workshops and protesting the Adam Carolla Show.

Well that’s really nice. But now it’s 2010, and GLAAD has absolutely nothing to show for its outsized megaphone and engorged wallet except the sniveling press releases that are issued every time a gay-friendly celebrity uses the word “fag.” A computer program could do the same thing. More than ignoring important issues, GLAAD diverts attention away from them. Time to throw the fat, loud drunk bitch out of the gay bar.

  1. And seriously, this is the same organization that, in the spring of 1998, encouraged a “Save Ellen” LETTER-WRITING CAMPAIGN instead of asking people to WATCH THE GODDAMN SHOW. Because, you know, writing letters always says more to a TV network than, oh, RATINGS.

  2. GLAAD’s focus is on the media and how gay people are depicted (in media that the general population will see) not gay rights overall. It’s their realm to complain about how the news networks cover something like a hate crime in Kenya or anti-gay politicians but to discuss those specific issues belongs more to a group like the HRC (who seem really determined to demonstrate irrelevancy). When they do cover those issues, it’s a call for the media to cover the story (as they did with Uganda’s “kill the gays” bull… at least six weeks after Rachel Maddow started covering it) not a direct commentary on the issue.

Admittedly, GLAAD has had a bit of an identity crisis in the past decade, ever since their mission has had to go beyond complaining about homophobia in media (I remember when their action alerts were nothing but summaries of anti-gay TV episodes) but condemning hate crimes and organizing against them isn’t their focus. Criticizing John Meyer’s use of “fag” isn’t one of their better moments (though, I expect they’re looking to be consistent) but that’s in their mission while the other instances are things that other groups focus on.

  3. Thanks for this. Leadership of both GLAAD and HRC have become more dedicated to getting press and having parties for the pretty than actually making any contribution to the GLBT community. Want to donate money that will have some impact and be well spent? Donate to your local GLBT and/or AIDS clinic (here in DC, Whitman-Walker Clinic, which has been doing an amazing job providing health, legal and support services for the gay communiity and PWA for decades) or Lambda Legal or Servicemens’ Legal Defense Network, which actually go out and fight the good fight rather than organizing cocktail hours.

  4. “Why attack GLAAD when we could be fighting the real enemy?”

Don’t let anyone tell you that there’s only ONE enemy that should be fought. Clearly there are many, and it’s valid to “fight” all of them, even the ones who happen to be gay.

Being gay doesn’t give anybody a license to douche.

Douche meaning “be an obnoxious jerk.”

NOT douche meaning cleaning out one’s ass, which all gay men should be required to do.

  5. I really, really could not have said it better. I have always hated GLAAD. The group only supports and includes those who resemble their Hitleristic master gay race agenda. As you said, they create major issues out of trivial things because they have a high profile name or face attached to them, like John Mayer, which I found the comment funny and not at all offensive in its context. So he said Fag. Who cares? While their at it, why don’t they just go after the entire country of Great Britian for calling cigarettes fags. It that kind of nonsensical militant stuff that makes people roll their eyes and say “GLAADs at it again, totally destroying any public credibility we may have for actual rights and protection against defamation. FUCK YOU GLAAD.
