Dan Savage reports that the letter was addressed to the “Owner/Manager” of Re-Bar. “Your establishment has been targeted,” the letter states. “I have in my possession approximately 67 grams of ricin with which I will indiscriminately target at least five of your clients.”

The author (who, most likely turned on by gay porn) outlines his intention to kill at least five people at each of 11 targeted locations in the neighborhood of Capitol Hill, the center of gay life in Seattle. With the dramatic flair of a Goth adolescent, he writes:

given the amount of exposure, I expect them to die painfully while in hospital. Doctors will initially mistake the symptoms for violent stomach flu; but organ failure occurring so quickly will make them think otherwise. Naturally, there is no antidote, no salve for their unimaginable pain. All I can say is the targets won’t care much that they’ll be dead and nearly frozen, just as, presumably, they didn’t care that they were living…

While Ricin is not always fatal, there is indeed no antidote. But anyway, what an asshole!

Savage talked to Re-Bar’s owner Carla, who received the letter. “It’s so vile,” she says. “It’s just hatred.”

The manager of another gay bar, Madison Pub, was more blasé: “After the initial ‘what?’, it’s like whatever.”

The letter mirrors another letter addressed to the Obituaries department of local paper The Stranger, which warned of the coming attacks on gay bars and adds, “I could take this moment to launch into a diatribe about my indignation towards the gay community, however, I think the deaths will speak for themselves.” 

Will somebody get this guy a cocktail please?
