The old bastard croaked. Fred Phelps. The religious zealot-turned-hatemonger who took American homophobia to new heights finally, finally kicked the bucket last night, and the internet has been filled with glee all day.
We all know what he did and some of what he said. Most of us tried to ignore it, though it was endlessly infuriating and moronic. And of course his decision to protest the funeral of Matthew Shepard brought him great infamy and fame, and led to many military funeral protests that brought him further infamy and fame. He was, basically, a whore for attention, and so are the rest of the members of the Westboro Baptist Church to this day, who are all mostly relatives.
Perhaps knowing that his end was nigh, Phelps started sounding vaguely nicer last year, telling his family and followers that they should be “kinder” to one another following a power struggle that ended in the defeat of maniacal daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper for control of the church. In response, the family allegedly excommunicated him from the church he founded.
You can read this obit if you want to learn more about his history of crazy anti-sex preaching, his onetime legal career, how he beat his children, and how his anti-homo campaign began in Topeka in 1991.
Anyway. He’s fucking dead. But Shirley and the rest of the gang are probably going to keep preaching their hate and putting forth their idiocy on national television whenever they’re allowed to, so his death is mostly symbolic.
Here’s what the porn and gay community has been saying about it so far.

Sorry Andy, but that’s bull because we are better than him even if we spit on his grave because of the great evil and suffering he caused others. No respect is due, but justice, and yes, revenge. This man tried to convince society that homosexuality is the greatest sin and evil that must be punished. This monster poisoned many a hurting soul AND I DO NOT FORGIVE HIM. Fuck him, I fight back.
Good for you, LOLZ, that he didn’t get to you, BUT, his message was highly contagious and could have steered the public majority against us. So you should care what they are saying and counter them with truth because mob mentality is highly contagious and dangerous.
He should be buried without any acknowledgement whatsoever.
I honestly don’t feel anything. This guy never really got under my skin because, frankly, what some random stranger thinks of my “lifestyle” has nothing to do with me. Not one iota. And it is not my job to make him feel better about it.
I honestly don’t know why people care. I honestly don’t know why these people are getting media coverage beyond the first few protests… I honestly am more disgusted with the media blogs, feeds, and newscasts that continually cover and use these zealots hate message to galvanize and manipulate for ratings.
There message isn’t important, frankly because they ARE NOT IMPORTANT.
their message…isn’t important.
I could not agree with what you said more. Good for you!
I would be happier if I didn’t know he was going to become a grand high general in the armies of Hell.
To be honest, I find this article very disrespectful. If you are happy about him dying and insulting him, you are not slightly better than he was. Because he used to do exactly the same. I think we should all lead by example and show some respect to someone who has died – whether he was a good person or not. Otherwise there’s no difference between us and him.
Please. People die. And when shitty people die, those of us who had no investment in them are free to feel happy about it. I’m not sure where you found this moral high horse but not everyone deserves your respect just because they ran out of time on earth.
Andy, I completely agree. With the exception of Derek da Silva, no one took the high road. I highly suggest everyone follow the lead of Judy Shepard:
“Regarding the passing of Fred Phelps, [husband] Dennis and I know how solemn these moments are for anyone who loses a loved one,” Shepard said. “Out of respect for all people and our desire to erase hate, we’ve decided not to comment further.”
Grace and dignity.
Id take a shit on his grave
wait wait, Seth Fornea’s full nudes got released??? WHERE????????????
Sassy……!
lol it was unintentional. as soon as I saw harvey walker’s tweet i had to drop everything and ask!
Dancing as fast as I can over here… http://thesword.com/kill-me-now-seth-forneas-first-colt-scene-released.html
It’s might be easier to reflect his own hate in his death – but showing him what he was wrong about is a better message to send and reflect.
