It was three days ago in Belarus that police officers in riot gear beat gay pride marchers"like a pack of wild dogs." Bob Christie’s "Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride" reminds us that gay rights are a global issue, and that even though Pride Parades make some Westerners cringe, in certain parts of the globe they are still subversive and daring acts. And once upon a time they were subversive and daring for us, too.

Let’s remember the good fight of our Founding Daddies the next time we feel the urge to cringe at all the boas.
