LISTEN UP FAGGOT!: Deerhunter’s Dreamy Descent

Led by the iconically lanky provocateur Bradford Cox—whose predisposition toward self-loathing, mortal longing, shimmering disaffection, and Dennis Cooper-esque sexual commentary has turned him into a millennial martyr for the music press—Deerhunter have managed to pick up the torch of outsider rock left by obvious predecessors Radiohead, Sonic Youth, and the Smashing Pumpkins and breathe new combustion and beauty into the flame. Gone may be the days when Cox would don dresses on stage and receive simulated blowjobs from bandmates, as well as the squalling white noise of their first full-length LP Cryptograms, but in their place we find an expanded Deerhunter narrative; one that includes early-sixties pop melodies, stories of self-crucifixion, and meditation on aging into the grave. Maybe Deerhunter are simply maturing, but whatever the case may be, Bradford and company prove that they’re not keen on wasting any time.
