Mathews’ films are sweet and sexy with a pouty atmosphere that stops just short of self-conscious artsy posturing. I think the trick is not being too serious; you can’t masturbate to In Their Room, but at least it’s not masturbatory, a rarity for the cool kid short film genre. In an interview with Gay Like You, Mathews says:

We’re so desensitized by porn on demand, which is also most often lacking of any feeling. And people are desperate for real connection the more we are technologically connected, right? I felt that showing real boys doing real things in their most intimate space would grab people’s interest. I wanted to do something that was the opposite of all the stuff I just bitched about.
