Only about 17 percent of gay couples in Canada choose to marry, whereas 80 percent of their heterosexual counterparts do. An article in Canada’s Xtra West suggests that queers in Canada fear the risk of divorce, disdain legal bondage or are taking a stand against marriage as a religious institution.

“I do not think that the church or the state should have any part in validating my relationships,” says the probably Communist Canadian Erica Hirshberger. “It will be valid without their consent.”

But what about the registry? The tailored tuxedo? The eight months of making collages and choosing hors d’oeuvres and having sex with your friend’s boss one last time. It seems these godless Canadians find the world of the heterosexual sick and boring.  Of course, since they’re granted all legal rights through civil unions, they don’t have to fetishize the frippery.

“I believe that many of us still believe that just by being gay, we have accepted unconventional perspectives on relationships,” Randy Morris of Vancouver. “I actually have reveled in the idea of my relationship being unconventional. Marriage, to me, seems to signify an effort at conformity.”

Either that or they fear turning out like Renee and Celine.
