GLAAD’s “Commentator Accountability Project”

Oh brother:

The GLAAD Commentator Accountability Project (CAP) aims to put critical information about frequent anti-gay interviewees into the hands of newsrooms, editors, hosts and reporters. Journalists or producers who are on deadline often don’t have the time to dig into the histories of a commentator. Audiences need to be aware that when they’re not talking to the mainstream media, these voices are comparing the LGBT people to Nazi Germany, predicting that equal treatment of LGBT people will lead to the total collapse of society, and even making accusations of satanic influence.

News producers and journalists on all those awful cable shows don’t repeatedly bring people like Tony Perkins or Brian Brown on because they are oblivious to their “histories” (and if they are oblivious, why isn’t GLAAD holding the producers and journalists accountable for being shitty producers and journalists? Because they’re on a “deadline”! Oh!), they bring them on because they are “controversial” assholes who say absurd things.

And how is any cable news show supposed to get any ratings without some familiar fucktard screaming insane things? Without Maggie Gallagher, there is no “debate.” And without a debate, there is no cable news show! And without cable news shows, how is anyone supposed to know what they should be pissed off about?

The Commentator Accountability Project is bringing all of these statements to light, while calling attention to the sentiments behind them. We will show that the commentators who are most often asked to opine on issues like marriage equality or non-discrimination protections do not accurately represent the “other side” of those issues. They represent nothing but extreme animus towards the entire LGBT community.

Calling attention to sentiments? As if anyone with even a partially functionable brain can’t infer the sentiment behind someone saying, “Gay people are Satanic.” As if bringing up an insane person’s past insane statements after they’ve said something insane in the present is going to shed some new light on how insane they are.

If GLAAD really wanted accountability (they don’t) and truly wanted to be effective (they can’t), they wouldn’t be wasting their time chasing clowns like Peter LaBarbera, they’d simply call for a boycott of any network that invited one of these commentators on the air. Or, they’d at least call for a boycott of whatever individual show he/she appeared on. Of course, going after the networks would mean taking on an actual challenge and standing up to real power (and real money, and real influence)…something the worthless cowards at GLAAD have never been smart enough or brave enough to do.
