The former NakedSwordsman spent the last year cultivating his own porn brand, Screaming Eagle XXX, beginning with the highly successful release of Ink Storm–which arguably launched the career of inked-up German wunderkind Logan McCree.
After winning double GayVN Awards last year for Best Actor and Performer of the Year for GRUNTS, Jake’s now received his first nomination for Best Director for Jock Itch, a sports-gear-filled fuck fest in which he also stars along with McCree, Scott Tanner and R.J. Danvers. Jake is doubly honored this year as a porn performer, with a Best Supporting Actor nod for Raging Stallion’s ultra-violent Western epic, To the Last Man.
We sat down with Jake to catch up, before the chaos awards season (the GayVNs are on March 28 in San Francisco) goes into full swing.
You’ve been nominated for your first directing award at this year’s GayVNs for Jock Itch. What’s the best thing about moving behind the camera in the adult industry?
Shooting porn is kinda like a sexy game show. I’m given all of these elements and a short period of time and a budget to make it work. You start with the blue sky ideas, hone it down and make use of every resource you have available. Edit what doesn’t work. Then grab a few things you see laying around. I used these black latex fisting gloves in Ink Stain just because I saw them sitting there, and I think they are so attractive on a mans hand. All shiny and black. Woof. I also remembered I used to jerk off with a gloved hand sometimes. I liked it because it felt like someone else’s hand. It’s a lot of fun.
You were part of the legendary club kid scene in NY. What was the most fucked up thing you can remember from the Tunnel/Limelight/Save the Robots days (assuming you were pretty fucked up for most of it and might only have a few memories)?
I remember Michael Alig bargaining some fresh-off-the-bus kid to drink a cup of his piss in order to get a hit of X. Alig was a total piss pig and squealed like a little girl when the guy did it. I was skeeved out by him most of the time. Limelight sucked. By then I had stopped talking to most of those people. There was whole part of the scene, before Disco 2000 and Jerry Springer that was really fun. Everyone was just fucked up and looking for a good time. Ultimately Alig killed the scene. Everybody thinks he’s the one that created it, but that freakshow had been going on all over the country since the early 80s. He just managed to capitalize on it. The early Tunnel parties were great; Alig’s outlaw parties, insanely fun. As for Save The Robots, all I can remember is a sand floor and scary bouncers.
Tell us something no one else knows about being on the set of To the Last Man in Arizona [the movie for which you’re nominated for Best Supporting Actor this year]. Any funny stories or gossip you can share?
Arizona was a tough shoot. Several of us on the set were going through very different life changing events at once, and we were completely cut off from communication with the outside world for the most part. It was close quarters, so there were some intense times. I slept in a tent, and I kept moving my tent farther and farther out. But the end of the 2-week shoot my tent was pressed up against to cow fence. I’ll remember it fondly, but not for a few years, I think.
What’s coming up from Screaming Eagle XXX – where are you hoping to take the brand and how do you want it defined?
Screaming Eagle XXX is always going to be whatever random shit I have baking in my brain. My latest video is called Ink Stain. Not really a sequel to Ink Storm as there was no plot. But just a bunch of tattooed dirty studs doing shit to each other. My next video is called Fucker and it’ll be out in June. I have a big budget video in mind, and I need at least another year of shooting experience and income from other projects to fund it. So for now, I am doing what is essentially loop reels of random scenarios. I do cool looking videos with hot sex. The thing about porn is there is a definite response you are looking for. I want to make you cum. How I will go about that is where I can get creative. I can be really ham-fisted and just give you full throttle fucking, or I can mind-fuck you into getting off. Or I can slowly push things into your scope that freak you out because it turns you on and scares you at the same time.
