Criticized For Being Ageist Himself, Davey Wavey Comes Back at the Gay Community

I thought it was kind of funny last week when Davey Wavey decided to come for all the young gays who are bitchy little cunts when they go out to bars and shun any and every older gay man who might be so rude as to look their way.

Davey himself isn’t that old, but he’s getting up there at this point — he’s 31, and he’s now about to celebrate 9 years as a YouTube star, with his first shirtless video uploaded on June 21, 2007. And he had a thing or two to say to young gays who have no respect for their elders, and think they’re all creepy.

But, as it always does, the internet came back at him after the video went viral (and it went viral despite his keeping his tits covered!), with plenty of fans and frenemies pointing out that in his 8+ years of vlogging, he’s mostly just taken his shirt off with other hot white guys, and he hasn’t exactly spent a to of time combatting ageism.

Well, Davey isn’t taking it lying down, and he wrote a little response on HuffPo, which I’ll excerpt.

As someone who has created more than 800 videos over the last 8 years, folks like Conner have noted that my content has included a number of young, white, shirtless gay men. This, they claim, undercuts my anti-ageism message with blatant hypocrisy.

But what critics fail to mention is that my videos have also included, in the last year alone, 88 people who aren’t young, cis, white gay men.

In fact, I just finished interviewing an 83 year old drag queen. I filmed LGBT seniors sharing their best advice and chatted with Sir Ian about his experience and advocacy. I posted a video about racism on Grindr and several videos featuring transgender individuals — including one yesterday!

Yes, Davey, we know. You can barely come up with anything to make videos about anymore, so sometimes it’s just a douching tutorial.

But anyway, here is that video featuring trans folks.

  1. I had no idea he produced that many videos. Davey should continue doing what he wants to do. For those who take issue with that, then there’s nothing preventing the complainers from making their own videos. But that would require actual effort, and I suppose that it’s just easier to criticize Davey.

  2. As a cis gay male, I struggle with understanding trans identities. This was a helpful first step in educating myself. Thanks to both of you for sharing.
