Craigslist Will Put You in Jail

Most recently, a Colorado man was arrested for trashing his girlfriend on Craigslist’s “Rants and Raves.” Apparently he violated an obscure state statue from 200 years ago that allows people to be incaracerated for the content of their speech or writing. The man wrote that his former lover fucked her attorney in exchange for legal services and accused her of beating her child. If convicted, he faces up to 18 months in prison, though attorneys across the state worry that a conviction would adversely affect free speech.

In a sting operation last week, Fairfield, Connecticut police dedicated their workday, as we do most of the week, to scouring Craigslist for sex. The officers contacted prostitutes and pimps who had posted ads on erotic services. The cops then waited in a motel room for their victims to show up. Five of them did, including a parole violator, a guy with ecstacy in his pocket and one fellow named Joel Outlaw.

Craigslist is responding to these incidents by buffering its security measures for erotic services. It already requires phone verification, a policy that has reduced ad volume by 80% and all but eliminated the overtures of sketchy fucktards. Soon, users will need to endure credit card verification and a small fee before posting to erotic services. (Profits go to charity.)

Also, Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut Attorney General and likely a fellow Jew, has teamed up with Craigslist and dozens of other state attorneys general to go after malicious software companies that help users bypass protective measures and place illegal ads. Most terms of use violations are no big deal. But given the huge, nation-wide scope of Craigslist, some of these posts involve illegal activities as serious as child abduction and human trafficking.

And then there’re ads like the one below.
